When is the best time to buy travel insurance?
Within 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment. That window keeps the pre-existing condition waiver and Cancel For Any Reason upgrade available on most plans.
Does ProtectTravel charge a fee?
No. You pay the same premium the carrier charges directly. We are paid a standard commission by the carrier, identical across every plan we list, so it never influences ranking.
What is a pre-existing condition look-back?
Carriers look back 60 to 180 days before purchase for treatment or medication changes. A waiver removes that exclusion if you buy in time and insure your full trip cost.
Will my policy cover a pandemic or epidemic?
Several plans cover testing positive before departure as a covered cancellation reason. Fear of travel is not covered without a Cancel For Any Reason upgrade.
Can I cancel my policy?
Yes, within the free look period — typically 10 to 14 days after purchase — as long as you have not departed or filed a claim.
Do I need coverage if I have credit card travel protection?
Card benefits usually cover trip delay and rental cars, rarely emergency medical or evacuation. Those two are the expensive ones.
What if I need to add a traveler after buying?
Call us before departure. Most carriers allow endorsement changes up to the departure date, subject to the new traveler's age band.
How do claims get paid?
Medical providers are often paid directly by the carrier. Reimbursement claims are paid by check or ACH, typically within 10 to 30 days of complete documentation.
